Slavery in the 21st Century... Each year, millions of children fall victim to some form of sexual abuse or exploitation. Girls and boys under age 18. The average age is 14 years. Some prostituted children are just 5 years old. 2 million children are currently enslaved in the global commercial sex trade : abducted, forced, coerced or sold by strangers or sold to pay off family debts. Children are beaten and forced to work in brothels where they are required to have sex with as many as 30 men each day. Child prostitution, pornography and sex tourism are multi-billion dollar international businesses. Thailand, Cambodia, Costa Rica , El Salvador, Sri Lanka, Mexico, the Philippines, India and Brazil have the highest rates of commercial sexual exploitation of children. 1/3 of the prostitutes in Cambodia are children. An enormous increase in child prostitution in Russia, Poland, Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic has emerged, as well. The consequences: long-lasting physical, psychological traumas, diseases (including HIV/AIDS), violence/abuse, drug addiction, unwanted pregnancy, malnutrition, social ostracism, poverty, in many cases, death. New Law in United States: the Protect Act of 2003. It prohibits U.S. residents/citizens from engaging in sexual acts with a child under age 18 outside of the United States. Who commit / facilitate this crime, are subject to prosecution and prison penalties of up to 30 years in a U.S. prison. The law can be used for arresting owners of travel Web sites, travel agencies that promote sex tours or arrange for clients to have sex with children. Your Response: Contact your Representative and Senators. Ask them to initiate a similar law as above, to initiate prosecution and rigorous prison penalties to those who sexually exploit children outside of the country. Raise awareness in your church, school, community or professional association about this problem. Contact yur local newspaper and ask for press coverage of this topic. We invite you to join us in the fight to protect them. (www.worldvision.org)
