General Description:

Mr. Tim Costello, a World Vision Inc. CEO, recently visited the Kalma camp in Darfur in Sudan, where almost 70,000 refuees are living. On the occasion of his visit, he noted - “The people still carry their pain with dignity. Most of the women are beautifully dressed in colorful fabrics, and the children would jump at a game of soccer.” - despite the terrible conditions in the camps and elsewhere in Darfur. Debs Harris and Mesfin Teklu, two World Vision staff members, also met with the refugees in the camp. The sufferings are going on: Mona and her family live in a small hut made from sticks, strips of cloth, and pieces of plastic, the six-year-old Hadida and her family live in a schoolyard, they are afraid to move because they’ve heard about women being raped and murdered when they leave the camp. And still on: women wait for food distribution, there are not enough clean water, proper food, and sanitation, this puts children particularly at risk for diarrhea, malaria, malnutrition, and respiratory tract infections. The World Vision handed out blankets and plastic sheeting beside food and water - for 70 000 people. There is not enough and clean water to cover the needs so it must be brought in from distant sources and distributed in jerry cans. (www.worldvision.org)
